Foto-Ernst

Herr Ernst has run this shop since the late 1940's, taking it over from his father. As you can see, it is no ordinary camera store. (Click the image for an enlargement)

At least it's not an ordinary 21st century camera shop. It seems that it got frozen in a timewarp sometime in the 1970's or 80's.

I still use him though because it's about the only place in Zurich I can go in and buy strange rubber wipey thngs, film clips, measuring jugs and chemicals. Inside it is like an Alladins cave, a jumble of organised chaos where Herr Ernst when asked for something will pause and moment, and remember where he put it in 1964 and go and fetch it.

That's amazing. You could run a competition alongside this: "How many enlargers can you spot?" or maybe slide projectors. I suspect the s/h selection must be compulsive viewing, too - I found myself wondering "I wonder what that TLR is and how much he wants for it". You can see where his heart is - even the digital side is invaded by an RB67 and F3.

Ah yes the joys of a collector and an enthusiast. Ernst sounds like one. There is a stamp shop near me in Edinburgh that is just like that with things stored on shoe boxes with simple filing systems - may not look wonderful or neat and tidy but it works. Thank goodness for the Ernsts of this world who provide a service and set out to keep the things that people want. They deserve to be appreciated.

I can see that at least he's offering also digital equipment! ... and Mr. Ernst must have an excellent memory going four decades back! :-)

I laughed out loud at your last line!

I can imagine your joy at having access to such a place. I'm chuckling just thinking of you and Herr Ernst discussing equipment and stuff.

Urban contestation... well I made it up from the French "contestation urbaine", which I may well have also made up. I had to check that the word "contestation" existed in English (I'd never heard it used but it's in the dictionary) - it's a common word (and behaviour) in France.

I guess urban contestation is about the fact that rebellion expresses itself more easily in the streets than in the country (you could try engraving messages with the plough but it's rarely been done, except against GMO's)

I'm glad you added a photo of the whole house, it's just SO in line with the shop itself. A beauty!

As you can imagine, I've spent a lot of time pawing over this. Nathalie is right .. it neeeded the additonal "Dracula's Castle" shot of the total building. I spent ages examining just the black tape on the window and trying to guess the date of the Kodak posters.

In Kingston theres a street that used to be all War Surplus and junk radio parts..........today it's Yogurt Cafes and Acupuncture frippery. You have to go onto the internet to find a cheap steel helmet (and even they are plastic now!!!!!)

Ham - you've got better eyesight than is natural at your age.

Peter - interestingly the digital ads are actually taped to the outside of the window. He clearly doesn't want digital to fully invade the sanctum, although he will sell it.

Nathalie and Chuckeroon - I'm glad you appreciate the full house view. For me it makes quite a difference that the house and shop sit in splendid isolation from the 21st century. It wouldn't be quite the same if it was one in a line of shops. I think the whole building is owned by Herr Ernst. I have taken a shot with the 5x4 field camera of the whole building which I think will be a fitting sort of document

...Oh, More Than Fitting!!! (BTW....at the moment I don't think you would want to bother about field cameras or any other camera in Richmond....it's lousy in that so sort of way the that you really just want to sit at home and read the latest Le Carre.)

Thanks MB - I am surprised, but I'm pleased to see that the website maintains the same kind of retro affinities as the shop!
